NJDOE Excused Absences
Every student is expected to attend school daily unless there is a valid justification for their absence. As you make plans for holiday breaks and vacations throughout the year, please keep our district calendar, attendance policy, and state laws in mind.
According to the New Jersey Department of Education and District Policy 5200, the following absences are considered excused:
- Religious Observance: As outlined in N.J.S.A. 18A:36-14, 15, and 16, students are excused for religious holidays upon a written request from the parent or guardian.
- Veterans Day Observance: In accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:36-13.2.
- District Board of Election Membership Activities: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:36-33.
- Take Our Children to Work Day.
- College Visits: Up to three days per school year for students in grades eleven and twelve.
- Transportation Issues: Closure of a busing school district that prevents transportation to the receiving school.
- Participation in one “civic event” for students in grades 6-12 - can only be applied to an event sponsored by a government entity, a community-based organization, or a nonprofit. The civic event is required to incorporate an element of service learning and address a public issue or concern.
We understand that there may be instances where absences are unavoidable. In such cases, please ensure that your child checks their Google classrooms for assignments and that any missed work is promptly completed so that your child can stay on track.
