Mathematics

“In this changing world, those who understand and can do
mathematics will have significantly enhanced opportunities and
options for shaping their futures. Mathematical competence
opens doors to productive futures. A lack of mathematical
competence keeps those doors closed. . . . All students should have the opportunity and the support necessary to learn significant
mathematics with depth and understanding.”
National Council Teachers of Mathematics (2000)

The goal of the Mahwah High School Mathematics Department is to assist students in developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills that are necessary to succeed in the 21st century college and career environment. The high school mathematics courses provide opportunities for success by all students through engagement and exploration opportunities rich in relevant mathematical problems. The courses focus on conceptual understanding, as well as procedural skills providing students with rigorous mathematics instruction at every level. The mathematics department is committed to using technology to enhance instruction and help students engage with mathematics in the 21st century.

The curriculum is designed to meet and exceed the Common Core State Standards for mathematics, as students will have opportunities to take courses such as Pre Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, and Computer Science, as well as the required courses of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. Students with advanced mathematical ability and foundations, may proceed through an accelerated program leading to advanced placement courses.
